profs
i have some fun profs this term.
1. Mr. Story-Teller: my prof for my International Business class. i’ve mentioned him before. we just sit there and listen to him tell stories for an hour.
He’s cool though, cuz they’re somewhat interesting. random… yet interesting.
2. Mr. Average Guy: my prof for Operations class just seems like a normal guy. He’s funny and tells random jokes and stuff, but he also seems to remember back in the day when he was a student. (he’s not near our age… maybe closer to a few years younger than our parents…) He told us about how when we was in school they had a ‘tradition’ of hanging out with the professors at the local pub every week and just talking about stuff (class related or otherwise).
He said he learned just as much from those chats, as he did from class lectures.
So, he seems to be a big advocate for hanging out with students at the on campus pub.
He ended our first class an hour early so that we could all go over to the bar and have a drink… and get to know him, or something.
i didnt go… but hey, it was probably beneficial for those who went.
each person’s first drink was on him too. so that was nice.
heh, we were talking about “Forecasting” (predicting future events) in class and to get his point across he said to students: “if you want to make a deal with me, here are the terms: you can predict what your grade on this midterm will be, and if your mark is within 3 percentage points of your prediction, I will buy you a beer. If it is not, you buy me a beer.”
it was funny. random too.
oh, and if you have a random business question, he’s the guy to go to.
it says so on his website!
hah, i love how he has a cartoon version of his face on there! it really does look like him!
3. Mr Jokes: this prof teaches my Business Law course. He always starts off class with a joke… which is a very smart way to start class, i say. b/c everyone quits down quickly so that they don’t miss the first part of the joke!
his teaching is also full of fun scenerios…. he’s just a funny person.
more importantly though, he welcomes participation and actively encourages students to apply the concepts we learn in
class to real events.
often when someone asks a question like, “well if the scenerio was like this —, would it still be legal?” and his reply is, ‘what do you think?’
not in a rude way though… just in a way to get the student to use their own brain to figure out the answer to the question.
now, if its a really tricky situation or something that we haven’t covered in class yet, then he will simply answer the question.
but if he has already given us the tools to answer the question ourselves, he’ll work through the answer with the student.
one thing i’ve noticed as i’m writing about these profs is,
1. i don’t have any women profs this term.
2. the above profs are all technically just ‘lecturers’ b/c they dont have PhDs.
the first has 2 Masters, the second has one Masters, and the third has a Masters and a Law degree.
lol. the lawyer spent a DECADE at Western.
that’s crazzzzy.
