interview stuff

February 18, 2006

i was listening to some random radio station that plays throughout my building (haha) and the guy had 4 interview tips:

1. When you get to the ‘office’ and are waiting for the interviewer to come to you, don’t sit down, remain standing.
The idea is that you don’t want the first thing the person sees of you to be you gathering your things and getting up.

I’m not a big fan of this one.
i kinda understand where they’re coming from, but it isn’t practical to remain standing in some offices. especially when the receptionist or someone tells you to have a seat.

Interesting sidenote, one of my profs said that within 40seconds of meeting you, the Interviewer has already made up his/her mind about whether to hire you.

That could make sense… if you consider that the only reason they want to talk to you is b/c they think your ‘credentials’ are good enough.

So my prof went into this whole ’schpeel’ about looking the person DIRECTLY in the eye and not looking away until they look away. That puts you on an equal playing field or something.
and shaking their hand properly, “2 pumps and you’re out.” :D

Back to the 4 things:
#2. Carrying your briefcase in your left hand.
Can’t remember if this was for ’shaking hand’ purposes or not.
Related to this, kinda, my prof said that if you’re at a function where you’re eating & mingling at the same time, always carry your drink in your left hand. That way your hand won’t be wet w/ condensation when you go to shake someone’s hand.

#3. Have proper posture during the interview.
They said to have one arm rested on the armrest, and the other on the table.
it’ll look like you’re ready for action or something.

#4. Have a 60second speech prepared about yourself, including past experiences and always ending with how you are qualified for the specific job you’re interviewing for.
Say this speech when they ask, ‘tell me about yourself.’
blah blah, heard that before.
