it’s the most wonderful time of the year

August 30, 2006

it’s that time of year again.

time to consider changing blog hosts.

hehe. i was on my old msn space and it was so bright and full of links and pictures and colour! i miss that…of course, i could just finally learn how to mess around with this one… but it seems like such a chore!
i tried a while ago. it was painful.

so i just activated a plugin that gives me a WYSIWYG text editor thing as i’m typing this! this whole time i’ve been using html!
I’m very excited about this.

i was watching a show tonight and the (British) people on it called ‘Take Out’, "Take Away".
I LOVE THAT!emoticon

so here’s a random story…
yesterday at dinner i was bragging to my dad and bro about how nice the washrooms are at my office. i enjoy a nice washroom….. note: if you’re ever going to London, England (i’m not quite sure if it’s Heathrow airport or not…i gotta check that) make sure u stop by to visit the washrooms in the airport. I LOOOOOVE those washrooms! i was thoroughly impressed! they were like changerooms in a clean and semi-expensive clothing store….but they had toilets in them of course.
anyways, back to the story.
me: ‘the washrooms at my office have an antibacterial soap dispenser AND a regular soap dispenser.’
bro: ’so does mine.’
me: ‘well mine has toilet seat covers.’
bro: ’so does mine.’
me: ‘well mine never runs out of toilet seat covers.’
bro: ‘….don’t you just need three?’
me: ‘huh?’

at this point, the table starts shaking.
that’s my dad. he has a a magazine (or something) infront of his face, trying to hide the fact that he’s cracking up… meanwhile his whole body is shaking.

bro: ‘…oh i see what happened.’

it took me about an extra 30 seconds to figure out what happened. I, of course was talking about those paper toilet seat covers. my bro was talking about normal toilet seat covers.

anyways, here’s a link to what my mom is up to:
http://www.scaw.org/livereport/tanzania2006/tanzania067.html
those are daily reports (including pictures) on how the bedkit distribution is going. (there’s an internet cafe (albeit a slow one) close to where they’re staying)

cheers.

say my name, say my name

August 29, 2006

so this whole “waking up at 6am” thing is killing me.
seriously…i get home and have dinner and then wonder how long i have to wait until i can go to sleep.
i suppose i should give myself time to get used to it. after all, it’s only been a week and 2 days.

so at work today i decided to get breakfast from the store downstairs. and as i’m waiting for my bagel to be toasted, one of the women who i ‘kinda’ work with comes in.
and she calls me “Elizabeth”.
that was different.
i suppose i could kinda see where she got that from… a fairly “classic” name…9 letters…
i didn’t correct her though.
and that’s what i find to be the comical thing in all this.
and then while she was ordering i started reading the newspaper and the employee was trying to get my attention to give me the bagel and my co-worker goes, “Elizabeth, your food is ready!”
and i turned around and responded….as if that was my name.

so for a while i was thinking about how to correct the situation without having an awkward conversation.
b/c in her defense, i haven’t put up my ‘name tag’ on my cubicle yet, b/c i’m only sitting there temporarily.
but on the otherhand, i’ve been working there for 3 months.

well, it all worked out in the end. b/c later that day i saw her again and she called me by my real name.
it’d be interesting to make a list of all the names people have called me. (minus nicknames)
at church people who know my parents more than they know me sometimes call me by my sister’s name.
it used to be awkward when people were like, “so are you still living in America?”
…now i just take it in stride.
but if they’re just greeting me as they walk by, i let them call me by my sis’s name…or my mom’s name…whatever!

the girl at work (who just took over my old job) is fairly interesting. after knowing her for only a few hours, she started to call me ‘Cat’.
she just randomly shortens everyone’s name into one syllable!
it’s funny cuz it usually works.
there’s a woman named “Rosemary” who everyone calls “Rosie”, but this girl calls her “Rose”.
hehe.
today she started calling me “Cathy” though.
and that’s just gotta stop.

all i need is your love

EEEK!!
D.D JACKSON HAS A NEW CD OUT!!!

it came out months ago!
:( i’m such a bad fan….

here’s a line from a review:

Establishing himself as one of the most adventurous and eclectic musicians of the past decade, D.D.’s artistic focus has been further shaped by the tranquility of domestic bliss he’s discovered through his recent marriage and new home.

and in his own words:

“Little could I have imagined back then that there would come a time when the natural “high” from performing and composing would be matched by the high achieved from the inviting bliss of settling down and marriage. On “Serenity Song”, the title tune is meant to evoke precisely this sense of tranquility I experience each day waking up next to my wife, Elizabeth.”

yayyyyy

“na na na na na na train”

TRAIN 48 IS ON TV RIGHT NOW!!
I’m very excited about this.
i feel like i’ve mentioned this before though.

a ‘few’ things on my mind right now….

i always wonder how much input artists have on their album covers. like, do they even have a say in what their music is ‘clothed’ in? … or do the producers usually get to do what they think will sell albums?
i suppose it depends on the particular artist/group. but sometimes i REALLY want to know if it was the artist that picked a certain picture or design for the cd booklet and cover.
i was thinking along the same ‘kinda’ lines when i went to Ikea last weekend. how much thought do they put behind the little details of the showrooms?
b/c really, if the room is arranged a certain way, more people will buy the stuff in order to decorate their homes the same way.
i want to know, does someone just randomly go around with a bunch of clothes from a thrift store and just put them in random rooms?
or do designers specifically pick out certain shirts and pants and accessories that ‘match’ with the room and the style of the room and then strategically put them in certain places?
it’d be interesting to know how that works.

speaking of ikea, when i went there last weekend (the first time in AGES) i realized that my apartment last year was like an Ikea store!
as we walked around i noticed TONS of stuff that my roommie had bought from Ikea!
from blinds to the kitchen table, to blankets, to the couch, to the tv stand, to chairs, to bookshelves! it was crazy!

speaking of books… u know what i hate?
LOOSING BOOKS IN MY OWN HOUSE!
haha, it’s fairly comical though, so i can’t hate it TOO much.
a few years ago i was reading a book (non-fiction) and it was fairly difficult to get into, but eventually i got mid-way in the book and was enjoying it. then all of a sudden i couldn’t find it anymore! to this day i don’t know where it is. and if i found it, i dunno if i’d start reading it again, cuz it’s SO hard to get into!
but it’s got to be somewhere in the house, b/c i never took it out of the house.
i apparently lost another book today (or yesterday). this one wasn’t hard to get into, but halfway through it started to get boring. it’s about the first American (and also the first female) to ever sail around the world by herself… i have a few ‘qualms’ with that title though, b/c she didn’t really do it all in one go (she had to fly back to America for a month or so)… and she also had someone on her boat with her for a couple hours when going sightseeing to some island. anyways, i dunno where that book is either. i’m thinking i’ll be able to find it once i clean my rooms.

that’s right, roomS!
i took over my sister’s room!
i’ve always used it to store my “moving boxes” inbetween school years… but a couple weeks ago i was sitting in there and i realized that it’s a LOT bigger than my room, the view is better, the windows are nicer… so why not just take it over? :)
i had the same thought a year or so ago, but then i realized that i’d miss my bright yellow room. (my sister’s is purple)
so i call her up and we chat and then i’m like, “so…can i move into your room?”
really, i figured i’d just ask as a courtesy, b/c she really has no basis on which to say ‘no’. she hasn’t lived home in 7 yrs!!
she was like shocked and appalled though.
but eventually she HAD to give in.
she’s apparently coming home NEXT summer (before she goes back to school), so it’s not a permanent move.
thus, my stuff is in both rooms. although i use my sister’s room more than my own. it gets better reception on the tv too!
AND there’s space for me to hang up my giant Canada flag! :D
“Oh Canada”
u know what’d be funny? getting up every morning and singing the national anthem!
i think our Prime Ministers should do that! :D

“Derek and Will go to Hollywood”

so i just watched the pilot episode of “Nobody’s Watching”.

it’s funny how the show uses some of the same tunes that are in Scrubs.
haha, like the one they play during sentimental moments. :D

… not sure if i actually like the show or not. it’s fairly silly…but some parts made me laugh.
i’ll probably watch a few more episodes once the season starts…and then decide.

i’m talking to you, but you’re not listening.

has anyone ever noticed that basically ALL of the new license plates on Ontario cars start with the letter ‘A’?
WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?

i noticed this at work.
and then this evening when i was walking through the WalMart parking lot.
it’s weird that i never realized that before.

for my fellow Ontarians: check it out the next time you’re at the mall or something…

oh, and speaking of cars, some ‘guy’ almost killed me this morning!
okay… not ‘killed’ just ‘hit’. and by that i mean almost hit.
i hate when stuff like that happens. b/c it reminds me that i’m driving on the road with people who are oblivious.
so, long story short, i was on the highway, going at regular speed (about 110km/hr) and some guy was coming on the ramp to get onto the highway at 100km/hr.
now, if this had been a regular situation, i would’ve slowed down, or done SOMETHING to accomodate the guy.
but in this situation, the guy was barely, BARELY off the ramp and he was going WAY too slow, and there was TONS of extra room for him to accellerate (actually, that lane just continues until the next exit)
but instead he just starts moving into my lane.
EXCEPT I’M THERE!
i was totally like, ‘okay, the guy has his clicker on. wait, he’s coming into my lane. wait, he’s going to sideswipe me!’
and then i honked the horn and swerved.
argh.

it’s okay though.
i’m good.
and the car is still pretty :)

GUESS WHAT!
on hotlyrics.net,0 Gavin DeGraw is the most popular male artist!
yayyyyy
(haha, this is my first time to the website.)

so all i want to do all day long is listen to James Morrison’s cd.
i listen to it on the car ride to work.
at work.
on the car ride from work.
and at home.

so, today was one of those “awkward” days.
anyone else ever do this:
get to work and realize that u absolutely HATE what you’re wearing?
and there’s nothing you can do about it except feel uncomfortable ALL DAY until you go home!
ugh.
fortunately, i’ve only done it a few times so far this summer.
i remember the first time i saw myself in the mirror in the washroom, and i was like, “ugh! what am i wearing?!”
i was so disappointed.
haha
hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
i’m planning on going back to my old standards. :)

mentos fresh and full of life! …Mentos the freshmaker

August 21, 2006

so i’m sitting here at the computer drinking a glass of milk and i’m reminded of this horrible, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE time when i was at the movie theatre sitting ridiculously close to the screen and as the ‘before the previews’ commercials were playing the ‘drink milk’ “rap” commercial came on.
i hate that commercial with a passion.
like extremely.
and here i was with it playing on a HUGE screen in front of my face.
there was no where else to look!
and it was BLASTING in my ears!
AND they played some kind of extra long version!
ugh!
the friends that i was with were laughing at me.
i admit, it would’ve been fairly comical if i hadn’t happened to me.

i was at Wal-Mart today at the Customer Service desk and i saw a box labelled ‘lingerie”, and i thought, ‘that’s got to be one of the WEIRDEST English words EVER!’
i mean, other words like ‘chaos’ are weird too… but ‘lingerie’ really doesn’t look like how you say it.
anyone know of any other words they think are weirder than ‘lingerie’?

work today was GREAT!
first off, at mid-day we found out that my P-i-C is going to be ‘moving up’ and will be continuing with the company in the fall!
just like me! (well, mine isn’t confirmed yet… but it’s pretty likely i’ll be staying.)
yayyyyy
i’m excited for her.
she really had to fight for that job. she ended up going to the department manager and explaining her situation to him. (b/c the supervisor didn’t really understand that she would only be going to school one day a week…. or b/c the supervisor doesn’t like her, and was trying to make sure she was gone after the summer. we’re not quite sure which one it is.)
so this means that after all the co-op students leave we’re still going to have a few 20-somethings in the department! yayyyyyy.
oh wait.
i forgot about the NEW co-op students….
weeeeee LOTS of 20-somethings! :D

anyways, the OTHER exciting part of work today (and possibly the highlight of my week) was when the department manager came around with 2 LCBO grocery bags.
he was holding them out and asking if anyone wanted some.
he comes around to us….
FREE GUM!
(lol, bet no one thought i’d say that! :D )
apparently some guy in the office somewhere was from Wrigleys and had a bunch of gum with him and was returning to the States, but didnt want to take the gum with him. so we got it!
yes, i work for a car company. no, i don’t quite understand the circumstances either. BUT WHO CARES! IT’S FREE GUM!
haha.
so i took a 4-pack of Winterfresh..something or other (apparently the manager didn’t get around to my P-i-C so i gave her one of my packs) and the girl who was training me today took a HUGE pack of Spearmint.
the old-fashioned kind that is in the sticks.
so they come like 7 sticks to a package. she got like 27 packages or something like that!!
i love free stuff.
perhaps that’s why i like working here.
so the connection with the title is: free minty gum - mints - mentos :)

“i’m not lost, just undiscovered”

August 19, 2006

earlier today i sat down at the family computer and started to write a post.
all of a sudden i accidently hit the “power” key on the keyboard and the webpage disappears and the screen says “Windows is shutting down”

I WAS SO UPSET!
who’s idea was it to put a ‘power’ key on the keyboard!
ARGH!
i got up and walked around the house grumbling, “that’s the WORST IDEA EVER!”
and my dad laughed at me.

now that it’s like 10 hours later, i’ve calmed down. :)
i’m going to disable that key the next time i’m on that computer though.
stupid stupid idea.

so anyways, what i REALLY want to mention is how much i LOOOOVE Amazon.
(i’m talking about the e-commerce company Amazon.)
but not only Amazon.ca and Amazon.com. Now, i love Amazon.co.uk as well!

This singer James Morrison is from the UK and his new album, Undiscovered, was cheaper for me to buy from the UK site, believe it or not.
i was excited about the cd, but expected that it would take extra long for it to get to me.
NOT SO.
it got here on Friday, and i was ecstatic!
AND…..
IT’S LIKE THE BEST CD EVER!

hah, not that Amazon should really get any credit for that.
i’m SOOOOO pleased with the album.
like i couldn’t ask for it to be better.
so 3 cheers for James Morrison. :D
“hip hip…”
