vintage Friday

July 27, 2007

I went to Value Village today, and I think it’s one of the best thrift stores I’ve ever been in.
Look what I found:

A vintage phone!!!
I LOVE IT!!!

i have a soft spot for old phones, so as soon as I saw this one, I snatched it up.
It didn’t matter if it worked or not.

but it DOES work! even better than my other old phones.
(the ringer is semi-broken, so instead of ringing it vibrates. …but the vibrations are audible.)

isn’t it a beauty?!! :D

making a difference

July 26, 2007

i just came across this article titled ‘Career Change: How to Make a Living by Making a Difference’

it’s interesting to see the various definitions the author has for ‘making a difference’.

stuff like, ‘treating customers with dignity and value’.

“thursday doesn’t even start”

there’s nothing like waking up to the sound of people re-shingling your neighbour’s roof.

i called the temp agency today.
finally.

they didn’t say, “oh we were waiting for someone like you to call! we have the job of your dreams waiting for you!”
but that’s okay.

yesterday (or was it the day before? …hmm, all the days are blending together in my mind…) I wanted to make some more Braille-esque cards, so I looked up words online and i’m now completely intrigued by Braille.
so one part of me wants to become a Braille transcriber.
did you know that Braille started as a way for the army to read secret communication at night?!
wait, i read that on Wikipedia, so i might be making that up. :)
i’m pretty sure i’ll grow out of the Braille career idea, but for the time being it sounds fun. it’s not exactly a ‘growing’ field though.
quite the opposite actually.

[Edit: Look what I JUST found out! The CNIB has a volunteer Braille Transcriber program! How EXCITING!!! …they ask for a 5 year commitment though, but still, it’s great to know that kinda thing exists! yay!!]

so some of the cards from yesterday:

that’s ‘hello’ in the bottom in blue.
‘greetings’ in yellow.
so the thing that i find fascinating is how each letter has a pattern, but at the same time, common combinations like ‘ing’ or ‘th’ have their own single pattern.
and when i was looking up the word ‘birthday’ i found that ‘day’ has it’s own 2 letter combination.
so the word birthday has 5 ‘letters’ (for lack of a better word…)

anyways, enough about that.

before i went for a walk today, i took one more picture inside the house.

in my house we leave candles unattended. :)
it makes life more fun and unexpected.
:)
this candle used to be a white pillar with glass ‘pebbles’ beside it, all inside a glass ‘bowl’.
i’ll never forget the time on morning, years ago, my dad lite a candle in the kitchen and then went upstairs to shave etc.
and when i went into the kitchen 30minutes later, there was a little self-contained fire on the counter.

alrighty, so onto the walk:

a dying shopping cart:

my guess: sun stroke.

lunchtime for a bee:

a fence that i like:

i didn’t quite ‘capture’ it the way i wanted to, but i’ll try again some other time.

and then there’s this street:

an emergency-vehicles-only street? …random…

and then i ended up in my backyard.

raspberries:

they continue to grow, regardless of the fact that we don’t do anything to fortify or encourage the plant. (we do quite the opposite actually.)

apples!!

they’re almost ready to be picked!

envelopes

July 23, 2007

i was watching a boring tv show yesterday when i decided to make a few envelopes using an old magazine i had laying around.

i have a few (read: 20ish) old magazines in my room, but there’s one in particular that i thought would be envelope-worthy.

i can’t remember the name of it, but it was some ’style’ magazine with professional/artsy pictures in it.
most importantly though, the paper was thicker than regular magazine paper.

anyways, on to the pictures:

my favourite magazine page:

and the resulting envelope:

and a couple of the other ones:

the ‘table of contents’ page, and an ad featuring the ceiling (I’m guessing) of the Tribeca Grand hotel in NYC.

that’s it for now..

new music!

July 21, 2007

I love finding new music.

i doubly love discovering it on my own computer.
and i don’t mean on the internet.
i mean, looking through a folder and wondering ‘hmm, what’s this?’
and it turns out to be a great song!

Thanks a bunch to whoever sent me “A Ghost Beneath the Tower” by the Winston Jazz Routine.

who knows, perhaps I downloaded it myself at the amazing site:
http://www.3hive.com
great great site.

i just downloaded the song “The Writer” by The Drawing Board [found here] the piano so fun! and i love the chorus:

‘Sticks and stones are only good for breaking bones and they’re awful hard to throw with your head in the sand.’

I’m also a fan of the song ‘Now, Now’ by St. Vincent. [download here]

peace out.

today was BEAUTIFUL!

July 20, 2007

today’s weather was fantastic!
i took a walk to the post office and then hung out at Tim Hortons for a while.
the goal: finish reading Northanger Abbey.
and i did it! …finally.
i’ve been reading that book forever. and it’s not even long.
the ending was really great though.

i just spent a few hours sewing and listening to The Postal Service.
i recently ‘rediscovered’ their cd among my collection, and i can’t get enough of it!
when i bought it years ago i only listened to a couple of the tracks.

i’m excited cuz now i get to choose a new book to read! i think i might go with something modern. …maybe short stories.
or that ‘Apocalypse Pretty Soon’ book i picked up at a thrift store.

radio poem#2

i can’t remember which blog i last did this on, but it was fun.
making a poem based on lyrics from songs playing on the radio. :)
this one is from some soft rock station:

How wonderful life is when you’re in the world.
I’m weak in the knees for you.
Wake up, wake up, wake up.
Oh you’re so beautiful.
I hope it isn’t too late.
Let the rain fall down.
You’ll come back to me.
You know I’m in love.
I don’t know where we went wrong.
We belong together.
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should.
So hard to let go.
Is this how we say goodbye?

c’est tout.

it’s 3am I must be lonely

well technically it’s 2:55, but that’s close enough.

i ordered my moo stickers! yippee!

i think i’m going to use most of them as envelope seals.
…pretty expensive envelope seals i guess, but oh well.

i need to be awake in 3 hours, so i should probably go to sleep.

here are a few pictures:

a blue scribbles card:

i saw these during my walk today… i like them:

and a picture from the front of my house. … i can’t remember if i posted it already. i took it a while ago:

can’t stop, can’t stop!

Can’t stop #1: listening to the song Can’t Stop from Maroon 5’s new album.

there’s just something about it! i love it.
“thoughts of you are tattooed on my mind”

Can’t stop #2: Laughing at Rick Mercer!

he cracks me up to no end.
to no end!
here’s a link to the videos: [link]
he did a segment at Western!! (scroll down to November 28, 06)
so i JUST noticed that the show has been around for 4 seasons (hah! who knew!?!)
so i guess my new agenda for tomorrow is to watch the videos from the other seasons. :)

Can’t Stop #3: Watching interviews from ‘The Hour’

seriously, who knew CBC had such good tv shows?!
i’m been sitting in front of my computer for hours watching the show.
i love the interviews!! [link]
it’s about time for me to stop though. i need to pick the pictures i’m going to use for my moo stickers!
that’s right, www.moo.com has stickers now!
(apparently they’ve been around for a while… i just found out today.)

art attack!

July 17, 2007

i saw the tv show Art Attack on tv today. i had no idea it still came on!

as usual, when i’m excited about seeing something on tv, i took pictures of the screen.
…it never works out very well, but for some reason i still try….

my internet was down today. ugh, so annoying.
so instead of surfing the net all day, i watched tv instead.
…it’s a hard life i lead.

hey, anyone have any ideas about how i could take a roadtrip across Canada?
i think it’s something i really want to do.
of course, i have no car.
and no money.
but i DO have a lot of time!
and lots of music!

i feel like it would be a whole lot of fun.

i remember hearing someone in uni saying that he drove from T.O to Vancouver one summer, transporting someone’s car for them.
the person paid them to do it too, so it was a pretty good deal for him.

i made another Line card today.
i think i’m eventually going to get bored with this card-making stuff.

not yet though.
not yet.

my weekend in a nutshell

July 16, 2007

this weekend was ACTUALLY fun!

here’s a card i made:

it’s simple and has bright colours, so i like it.

last week my dad asked me to create a brochure for our church, outlining the programs they offer. (weird…should i be saying ‘the programs we offer?’…odd.)

so of course, i did nothing about it all week, and on Saturday afternoon i sat down at the computer to see what i could come up with.
i LOVE doing stuff like that!

so, once i had my first draft i showed it to my dad, for his comments, and he was shocked that i was actually doing it. he figured i had decided not to.

anyways, it went through a few versions …my dad wrote new text for a lot of the program descriptions and we changed some of the pictures.

(one thing he was adamant about was spelling the word ‘program’ as ‘programme’ because we’re Canadian.
i dunno, it just looks wrong to me.)

so, yesterday night (i’m talking 11:30pm) we went to Kinkos and had a test copy printed.

Kinkos is such an interesting place.
first of all, i love the stationary-theme they have going on…
plus it’s interesting to see who’s there, and what they’re doing.
like at 11:30 on a Saturday night.

anyways, so this afternoon (Sunday) we revised a couple more things and then went back to Kinkos to print 100 copies. (sooo expensive!)
we decided on glossy paper instead of cardstock, and i really like how they turned out.

we came home and folded and cut them.
with all that paper around, of COURSE i took pictures! :)

folding:

cutting:

the inside looks like this:

i love that baby in the middle. so cute!

the finished stack:

looks so small…

so that’s partly why my weekend was fun. it was nice to be productive :)

i think the other reason this weekend was enjoyable was b/c i’ve been listening to a lot of drinking music..
i was amused when i noticed it. i didn’t plan it, it just so happened that a lot of the songs mentioned alcohol:

Jamie Cullum’s “Nothing I Do”:
We were so drunk last night, we had that stupid fight. You called me a useless, selfish prink…

The Postal Service’s “This Place is a Prison”:
What does it take to get a drink in this place? What does it take, how long must I wait?”

and
Mark Ronson’s “Stop Me”:
So I drank one, it became four. And when I fell on the floor, I drank more.
