the cover of today’s newspaper:

they actually did it!

April 26, 2008

I’m shocked! I can’t believe the TTC workers actually went on strike!
it came totally from left field!

anyways,
here’s an entry I wrote from the apartment last night:

//
this is my first blog from my apartment!!

…how exciting!

I actually don’t have internet here - for some reason i can’t access other people’s unprotected wireless networks!! hmph! — so it’ll be uploaded this when i’m at home, but it’s still technically written from my place :)

so, i’m bored.

…this living alone thing is going to take some getting used to i think.

i know i’ll love it. i just need to get some stuff in this place to make it feel more ‘homey’ and less like a new apartment with all new stuff in it.

my bro came to see the place this week. i asked him what he thought:
“it’s small. … and it smells like paint.”

…thanks a lot bro… very encouraging.

sheesh

anyways, i’m sitting on my new sofa bed/ couch right now.
great big orangy-goodness.
and i made it!

(”assembled” is the correct word.)

and here it is in some spooky light:

so now that this big monstrosity is here, i don’t know where i’ll put my bed. …maybe i should just use the sofa bed as my bed…
doesn’t the floor look new and shiney?!! ..it definitely looks better in pictures than it does in person.

the coffee table that I made (”assembled”) is also in those pics! I like it. …I always feel such a sense of accomplishment after wrestling with those ‘assemble-yourself’ pieces.
i really have no patience for those kind of things. I think that’s why I usually assemble those things on my own, b/c otherwise i’d get upset with my helper as well.

…if you look closely at those pics, you’ll also see a lamp that i made too!!

anyways, I’ve been fairly m.i.a this week because of my cold.
i took wednesday off from work.
–my first time being paid to be sick!
it wasn’t as glamorous as i envisioned.
I always pictured sick days as time when you sit on the couch at home with a cup of a scrumptously good drink and lots of snuggly blankets and watch movies and whatnot.

my sick day was more like: 14 hours of sleep.
I don’t really remember what else i did with the day. I remember watching a couple hours of bad mid-day tv shows… but that’s about it.

handmade chair

April 22, 2008

well, not quite ‘handmade’.
I assembled it last night. it was fantastic. …in way that only Ikea furniture can be.

apparently that’s my new favourite ‘picture-taking’ spot.

So I slept at the apartment last night.
It was ‘great’!

I met up with some people to watch a pre-screening of a movie at the local cinema and hit up a local coffee shop, and then I headed back to the apartment.
…and discovered that my key doesn’t work in the eternal ’security’ door, which is only locked at night.
It was hilarious. classic!
…stranded in the middle of the night.
so i stood at the door stoop, trying to decide what I would do…
‘take the subway to ’sauga? …keep waiting on the sidewalk? ..frantically call the landlord?’

I decided to just hang out on the stoop.. but i wasn’t there for too long. one of my neighbors came by!

It was great. this one particular guy who I’ve seen around like 5 times already. (odd, considering that I don’t even live there yet.)
he apparently walks his cute dog a lot.

anyways, he let me into the building and I had a fun night sitting on my closet floor, assembling a towel rack. (it’s SO wonky. i love it.)

I eventually went to ’sleep’ on a ‘mattress’ on the floor.
‘oops! I forgot a pillow! …oops! I don’t have a blanket! …oops! the street lights shine REALLY brightly into this room!

let’s just say, it wasn’t the best sleep ever.

achoo!

April 20, 2008

yay! no strike! ….pfft, I knew it wasn’t going to happen!

but still, this is exciting because it means that I can keep my plans of sleeping at my apartment tomorrow night! sweeet!

I’m currently looking for some small prints to put in my kitchen. Like 5x7 size. (I already bought the frames. haha.) Anyone have any suggestions? I’ve been looking on Etsy. (And already bought one that I’ve been keeping tabs on.)

And I think I’ll put up some scenery pics that I’ve taken (London, Rome, Guyana etc), and I’m not sure what else…
If enlarge them to like 8.5x11 size and put them all on the same wall, they should probably all be the same colour-’scheme’ right? (ie, I shouldn’t mix black&white with coloured pics?)

I have lots of oil paint left, so I perhaps my painting days aren’t over yet!

oh and i’m sick. …bummer. I’ll probably get over it soon though. it’s just a sore throat/ headache/ stuffy nose kinda cold.

allerum

my mom and I went to my apartment on Saturday to deliver all the stuff that I’ve bought.
It was fun! …I was a tiny bit worried about what my mom would think about the place.

I realized that I apparently got this apartment solely on my own, so mom could potentially walk in the front door and say, “this place is disgusting! How could you spend money on this?!” …but she seems to like it. …so that’s good.

We were there for about 2 hours and did some cleaning and unpacking.
I put up my yellow-ness in the washroom, which was exciting.

oh, and i ended up getting that Ikea sofa that I saw on Craigslist!

ORANGE!!!

It came disassembled, so it may just be a big scam…. but I’ll deal with that when/if it I have to.

But if it works out, it’ll be another successful Craigslist purchase!

Craigslist is quickly becoming one of my favourite sites. they have everything!

CAT!

“I think that I know things may never change.” - Adele “Best for Last”

I am LOVING Adele’s album “19″.
I had a feeling I would.

Here are a couple things I’ve seen on people’s blogs:

from mixplate:
Fred Flare 500X Giant earbud speakers:

are these not hilarious?

$60.

…wait, are there two computer screens on that desk?

and from Banana Head Pancake:
The I am NOT a Papercup cup from Charles & Marie:

It’s made of porcelain and a silicone lid!
$20

…I’m very tempted.

ikea!

I went to Ikea this evening.

(I got home from work before 6pm!! It was amazing!)

I ended up spending 3+ hours in the store.
it was great! …though, I really didn’t have much of a plan…. I wanted to get a couch and a bed and a bunch of other things, but i didn’t.
here’s what i picked up:

…it doesn’t seem like much actually.

bathroom = yellow! (yay!!)

just a couple things for the main room:

I’m kinda regretting the coffee table… it’s super cheap, I don’t think it’s going to last very long.

random stuff:

that’s an orange circle rug!
I have no idea where it’s going to go, but I wanted one ever since I saw them, so I decided to finally get it!

I’m considering getting this couch:

…but I read a few bad things about it (cheap-wise)

and maybe I should shop at places other than Ikea…

new magazine!

April 16, 2008

I picked up this magazine the other day.
It’s GREAT!
It’s called ‘Colors‘ and apparently each issue focuses on a different topic. I’ve never noticed it before. But this current issue was pretty hard to miss:

there’s no color on the cover!!

But there IS Braille!!

and the back has the image in black and white:

So this issue is dedicated to the blind and visually impaired. It features the stories of 72 visually impaired people from all over the world.

it’s SO interesting!
here are some random pages:

I think this is the first black and white ad I’ve ever seen for United Colors of Benetton:

from just flipping through, this is my favourite quote so far:

oh! and the entire magazine is in two languages!

i highly recommend. it’s very cool.

here’s something completely unrelated:

I was at the apartment on Tuesday doing a bit of cleaning and I bought this ‘green’ cleaner. (I use quotation marks because I don’t think it’s actually green…i mean, it’s made by Clorox! — I was talking with my dad the other day and he called quotation marks, “uplifted commas”. I thought it was great. very English …or something…)
anyways, this ‘green’ cleaner smells fantastic! like limes! ..or Sprite or something. it could be air freshener :)
