more art!

May 28, 2008

I’m currently collecting some small prints to put on my kitchen wall.

I’m excited about it. I’m envisioning a bunch of different sized frames on the wall. Either green or brown, and different styles.
oh! I should go to Goodwill!

(wow, this whole time i’ve been looking at Blacks and Deserres, and finding nothing! I bet I could find a bunch of cool small frames at a secondhand shoppe! …hmm, I wonder if there are any near me…?)

anyways!

I went home last night and found this in the mailbox!!

BENT mail!
argh.

it’s even written clearly on the package: “Nicht knicken!”

hehe, it’s from Austria! (fun!!)

the contents…. my very own Mareike Auer prints!!
I think they’re great.
I’ve wanted them since I saw them on etsy.

Here are the ones I got:

“The story about me and the deer”

and
“The story about me and the squirrel”

These make me smile.

Though, looking through her website again, I can’t remember why I didn’t get “The story about me and the fir cone”.

I just realized that I now have prints from 2 of the 4 artists I mentioned back in September!! Maybe i’ll look through John Clark’s site again, and see what he has listed…

another cellphone!

May 26, 2008

(my view from here.)

So, I’m getting a new cellphone! YAY!

…haha, it’s my third cellphone in like 5 months.
This one is an account transfer from some random guy.

I’m excited about it because I’ll have Caller ID and Voice Mail. (”ooo…ahhh”)
I go for the cheapest plans possible, so I don’t ever get those kinds of features. This is exciting for me. Caller ID! imagine the possibilities!

the thing I’m MOST excited about though, is that I might get to have a 24 ring tone!!!
hah! this is silly!
so, i’m talking about the television show 24. Anyone who watches it, knows that the CTU has a distinct ring tone for the phones in the office.
One of my coworkers has a KRZR and she has it programmed to that same ring tone!
So whenever it rings, I think, “quick! Answer the phone! It’s Jack Bauer and he has some information that is pertinent to stopping the current crisis!”

…and then I remember that Jack Bauer is a fictional character. …and even if he wasn’t, I don’t work at CTU, so he wouldn’t be calling….

Anyways,
something very random happened a couple days ago.
I can’t remember what I was doing exactly, but I think it was Friday after work and I was at some miscellaneous subway station after buying the accessories for my MasterCraft.
Well I had accidentally wandered onto the wrong subway line, and I was looking for the escalator to take me up a level so that I could switch sides (or something).
And as I was walking past people, someone randomly tapped my arm and said ‘hey’.

I stopped and said ‘hi’ back, and then I realized who it was.
Some RANDOM girl that I knew in Guyana!
I didn’t know her very well, but I saw her around a few times.
most notedly on our flight leaving the country. I was coming home for Christmas vacation and she was leaving the country ‘for good’ because her contract was up.

That was an interesting time because I was elated with the fact that I was going back to Canada and she was practically in tears about leaving Guyana.
Our thoughts of the country were like the exact opposite.

Anyways, a month or so after I returned to Guyana after the holidays, I ran into her again. Apparently she had been able to secure another position and she was back in the country for a much longer period. And she was thrilled.

so now, a few days ago, I bumped into her on the subway platform, and we talked for about 30 seconds until her train came by.
me: “hey!”
her: “hi! So you’re back!”
me: “yeah! you too!!
her: “yeah. I’ve never seen you smile brighter!”
me:“haha, yeah I guess. …wow, this is random.”
her:“yeah. [train comes] well… catch ya later.”
the end.

random eh?

a very T.O weekend

May 25, 2008

I feel like this weekend was very ‘Toronto’.

Cecilia was in town, so we decided to go exploring, by way of the Open Doors “Festival”!

So, we met at Mel’s Delicatessen in the Annex for brunch. It was VERY yummy. I’ll be back there.

The Paper Place was also having a sale on Saturday so we hopped on a street car and went down to Queen Street, which we walked down and popped in a few cool stores.

like an interesting concept store.

I didn’t really understand most of it…

eventually we saw the great bright orange of The Paper Place!

And I noticed the ‘Type’ store for the first time!

we went in…

ISN’T IT GREAT?!!!

they carry great off-the-wall books and cool stationary, including this book that i picked up:

MIRANDA JULY!!
I was looking to buy her book this past week, but couldn’t find it in Chapters, so I’m excited to have it now. …and it was sold at the US listed price! (sweet!)

we didn’t end up buying anything at The Paper Place, but we did drop by Dufflet on the way back:

Ceci got cheese cake and coffee:

yum!

I opted for this key lime tart and a Perrier.

here’s a shocker, my order came to less than $3.00! CRAZY!
it was really good. very refreshing… (you know, lemon and lime…)

alright, so the main event: Doors Open!

we actually spent a good deal of the day eating and shopping, so we didn’t have too much time to open doors, but we went to the CBC for our first stop.
They had the set for The Hour and some other random show open.
It wasn’t very exciting…. but here’s a picture of The Hour.

just like how it looks on tv! Imagine that!!

For whatever reason, I was making some inappropriate comments while at the CBC (which I felt bad about), so as I left I signed some petition to keep the CBC-Radio 2 playing its current content.
The petition was out on the street in the form of chart paper on an easel, and people were just signing this as they walked by.
now, isn’t a petition supposed to have more than just ’scribbles’ on a piece of paper? like, shouldn’t people have to put down some kind of info, like a phone number of email address, so that someone can make sure that they are real people who signed this thing? …not just one enthusiastic event organizer who decided to make a bunch of scribbles on chart paper.

mmm, someone is BBQ-ing outside! smells yummy!

so anyways, after the CBC we stumbled upon St.Andrews Church on King Street, which is also participating in Doors Open, so we popped in there.
It was nice. ..a church. …you know, stained glass windows and such.

after that we headed back to my apartment and I can’t remember what we did… or what I did after Cecilia left…

This morning I headed back to Queen Street for church.
It was interesting. I got semi-lost, but it was a really silly mistake, so I was kinda frustrated and considered just going back home instead of arriving late.
but I decided that I’d only be like 10 minutes late, so I went anyway.

and then when i came back home I napped the afternoon away, and I’m still fairly sleepy. I think I’ll go get a coffee….

power tools and scrabble

May 24, 2008

my first MasterCraft.

I bought a power tool at lunch on Friday.
it was great.

considering the fact that i know nothing about power tool shopping, I think I did pretty well.
…I mean, I used the tool and the accessories I bought to put up a bookshelf, and it hasn’t fallen down yet…so I’m counting it as a success!
:)

Hana came by on Friday night! I think we’ve decided to be ‘hip’ and play scrabble in public, like in coffee shops and things.
People are going to see us and want to join in… scrabble-in-public is going to be the new big thing. …you wait.
so, on Friday we stayed in my apartment and played. …I think we were going to watch a movie at the same time…but somehow that didn’t work out…
oh - I ordered pizza, and it came with ginger on it! ..GINGER! *what in the world?!*
How does ginger end up on pizza?!!
I really should have called them and made them give me a different one, but i didn’t.. instead Hana just scraped off the ginger. …she’s a good sport :)

Here’s a pic of our scrabble game:

It got a little sad when I tried to put the word ‘go’ on the board twice ….

the best is Hana’s word, “trivial” at the top of the board. she got like 500 points for it! well… not ‘quite’… but it was a lot.

Gocco-tastic!

I’m very excited.

I HAVE A GOCCO MACHINE!

“ahhhhhh!!!”

Actually, I’ve had it in my hands since last Saturday. And it arrived on my (old) doorstep a while ago, but I haven’t mentioned it b/c I wanted to have pictures to show. …and now I do, so now I am! :)

Gocco is a fantastic little Japanese apparatus that’s basically a cross between a stamp and a silkscreen.

I’ve wanted one ever since I knew they existed, so this is exciting for me.

This past week I’ve been trying to decide on what my first print should be.
I didn’t want it to be super complicated, but I also didn’t want it to be super simple.

I eventually decided to err on the side of simple, since I like simple, and so here are the pics!

lines… with circles!

…I reproduced it a whole bunch of times…

and in different colours!

it was fun :)

Jackfruit

May 23, 2008

Doesn’t “Jack Fruit” sound great?! i love that name…
I ordered a Jack fruit smoothie the other day and it was absolutely disgusting….and had a really bad after taste.
actually, it may have been the reason i felt sick last night.

anyways, I’m wired. it’s midnight and i should be sleeping, but i can’t.

I just watched the Grey’s Anatomy season finale. — it was SO good!
it makes me want to go back to my Season Two Grey’s Anatomy obsession, where I would watch the episode on tv, immediately download it, and then watch it like 5 times during the week leading up to the next new episode.

and So You Think You Can Dance is back!
love it.

and i just made a bunch of cards that I can’t wait to photograph tomorrow! (during the daylight)

AND,
I used a new anti-dust wood cleaner on my floor and now it’s slippery!
(haha, i think i’m going to fall. :)

and I went to my local used book store and picked up some Canadian literature!
(I’ve decided that if I buy enough books I might actually read them….)
i’m excited about one in particular:
“St. Urbain’s Horseman” by Mordecai Richler.

hmm, do i care?

May 21, 2008

I’m waiting to go to sleep.

Mandy came by today (YAY!!) and we grabbed dinner at a new Vietnamese restaurant.
…and now my stomach hurts.
bummer! That never happens to me!

so now I’m trying to decide whether I should try to go to sleep with an upset stomach, or if I should continue doing what i’m doing now… which is half watching the American Idol finale and half surfing the net.

only a small part of me cares who wins….and it’s funny watching the ‘group numbers’. they’re so cheesy, I wonder what the contestants think….especially the ‘rocker’ types. like marching across the stage in a routine.
maybe they just consider it all a means to an end (being famous).

right now George Michael is singing.

oh! I’m doing another craft show in June!
…and I just realized that I’m in the participants section of their website.

it’s actually a cool idea for a festival. it’s called The BIG on Bloor Festival and it basically a huge event along Bloor street.
I can’t remember where it starts and ends, but it’s going to be MASSIVE!

some of the participants look so cool, i’m hoping I’ll be in the same general area as them so i can visit!

Anyways, the websites:
The Festival website.
The participants page (search for “Kiwi Punch Designs”) - they have pictures of my stuff! cool! …I don’t think I actually gave them those pics… it’s great that they put them up though!

“you like Matlock?!”

May 20, 2008

This past weekend I hung out with my Scrubs-buddy from university. (We used to go over to each other’s apartments to watch Scrubs and CSI or E.R… and sometimes watch Scrubs on my laptop between classes :)

We did some shopping on Yonge Street and I picked up a few movies from Blockbuster — they’re have a 25% off sale right now! it’s ridiculous b/c most of their used-dvds are already just $7!
and then we headed back to my place where I gave her the ‘grand tour’.
She was looking in my closet and this happened:
her: (picks up Matlock dvd) “You have Matlock?!” (NOT in a ‘are you crazy’ tone)
me: “you like Matlock?”
her: “I love Matlock!!”
me: “You love Matlock?!!! I LOVE MATLOCK!!!”

and then we cracked up for like 5 minutes. I have no idea how we didn’t know this about each other!

So then we sat down and watched the first ever Matlock episode.

I’ll say it - it was SO bad. The story just dragged on and on… Matlock didn’t even appear in the episode until like 45minutes in! (it was a 2hr episode.)
I’m glad they got their act together for the later episodes.
it was brutal.

(haha - is anyone getting sick of me continuously talking about Matlock? :) …i’ll try to stop.

here’s something different:

that’s my table.
i have about 4 crafts on-the-go right now.
those are some magnets I just made. (and a ring and a coaster, remote, x-acto knife, thread and candy…)

do stuff

hey apparently Radio Shack still exists! …just not in Canada.

I went to their website today, their slogan is “Do Stuff”.

love it.
