a regular day

August 31, 2008

today was a pleasantly normal Sunday.

well, except for the fact that I’m not thinking about going to work tomorrow!
… i still think that all weekends should be three-day weekends….

anyways, here’s a video of a cover of ‘State of Mind’ by Raul Midon.
How is that guy playing the guitar like that?!! I’m mesmerized because his hand is definitely not moving that fast!

but perhaps I don’t know enough about the guitar to understand how the movements of his other hand can make sounds even though his strumming hand isn’t moving….

anyways,
I like the ‘Dewi and Anthony’ pair!
They’re one of the ‘Youtube Stars’ that I’d actually buy a cd from.

It could be because they always choose to cover songs that I like…. but I feel like you have to be good in order to cover songs…

anyways,
here’s a pic of a ring I made:

I call it a BAM ring, cause it’s so huge. :)

babies!

August 29, 2008

when Manz was over, we somehow ended up watching this video of Galen Weston (”Mr. Loblaws”):

hah! babies!

I think I was originally trying to find a French version of his commercial. But babies are much better. hilarious even.

I think he’s cool.

I’d like to own a major Canadian enterprise before my 35th birthday.
(erm… would I really?)

anyways, on a completely different note, I decided to braid extensions into my hair this evening.
Not sure why I thought I could do it… like I guess I didn’t learn my lesson from the last time… or maybe I was confident because of how simple this video makes it look. (don’t you love youtube?!)
But I just finished about 70% of my head, and it doesn’t look disastrous! SUCCESS!
I guess practice really does make perfect….

So today’s TED Talk of the day is Anna Deavere Smith’s Four American Characters.
I like this quote from her performance:
“Everything I do is word for word off of a tape. And I title things because I think people speak in organic poems.”

less cards more…?

August 28, 2008

I’ve decided to start back up my KPD blog!

So there will be less greeting card talk on this blog.
…don’t ask we what I’ll write about instead! :)

not enough hours in the day…

…to watch all the TED Talks!

I was looking for a particular Talk on the TED website’s browse page and again I was blown away by the tons and tons of amazing speakers!!

TONS.

And actually, it was fun to see that you can browse based on different fun criteria like: Most discussed, most jaw-dropping, most persuasive, most inspiring, most beautiful…

The Talk that I was looking for was this one:

It’s activist Majora Carter talking about her fight for environmental justice in the South Bronx.
It’s very good. I recommend. She’s very passionate.
…and speaks really quickly too. :)
on a superficial level, I like when she called her fiance her ‘beloved’.
no one uses that word anymore. I like it.

I was excited when I first started watching that Talk because Carter is one of the people ‘featured’ at the beginning of every Talk! (well, the beginning of the newer 2007/8 ones, like this one) …you know, in that introduction, alongside Bill Clinton and others.
There’s also the Blue Man Group (I haven’t watched that ‘Talk’ yet though) and I feel like Rives is another one of the people, but I’m not 100% sure of that either. (the guy in the green shirt?)

A few other Talks that I’ve watched recently:
today: Neil Turok’s 2008 Wish for an African Einstein
yesterday: Ben Saunders: Three things to know before you ski to the North Pole, Tony Robbins: Why we do what we do and how we can do it better (did you know that he swears? Somehow I was surprised by that. Maybe because no one else swears in their Talks… The Al Gore joke was really funny :)
the recent past (and/or Talks that have stayed with me, so I feel like I watched them recently): Peter Gabriel’s talk on Fighting injustice with a videocamera, The National Geographic’s David Griffin on how Photography connect us.

I really liked Peter Gabriel’s talk. I was ultra confused for the first 5 minutes though. I kept thinking ‘Peter Gabriel. Isn’t he a singer? How come he’s talking about injustice? IS he a singer? oh yes, he must be. He just mentioned Bono. hmm, what was that song that he sang? I think I liked it. ohh what was the name of that song?’
The song is ‘In your eyes’. (I love the iPod Search function!)
Anyways, it reminded me of this news story.

long time coming

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a realllly long time!

It’s been in the news lately, so maybe everyone knows about this already, but the intersection at Yonge and Bloor is now a ‘Scramble’ intersection!
(haha, I originally wrote ‘Scrabble’)

so, this means that all cars stop at the same time and it’s a FREE FOR ALL for pedestrians!

oddly enough, I’m VERY excited about this. I think it’s hilarious. I can’t wait to try it out and walk diagonally across the intersection!!

the other thing that I wanted to write about a LONG time ago was ‘Operation NICE‘ by graphic designer, Melissa.

A little blurb from the site:
“If everyone was a little bit nicer to the folks they encountered each day, perhaps the world would be a more pleasant place. Operation NICE was initiated to remind you that a little NICE goes a long way.”

It’s a fun website. I like the NICE assignments.

oh yes, and Operation NICE’s Melissa is the same ‘Mel’ from MelissaHead Designs!
That’s right! …the creator of my ultra cool desk calendar!

(that’s it on the right, next to George.)
That pic was taken back in January.
It’s funny, my desk doesn’t look much different these days.

I find it interesting when people have all kinds of pictures all over their desks.
A few years ago I was flipping through a book at Chapters about how women shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to business and one of the examples was how women sometimes make their desk/ workspace look like their living room at home, with tons of pictures of their family and whatnot.
…I found that interesting cause I hadn’t considered that before.
another example was asking for permission unnecessarily. (like to go to the washroom)
oh! and another was smiling too much. I do that one.

on a different note, I just looked up Joshua Radin on Wikipedia and they categorized him as a ‘whisper rock singer/songwriter’ haha. cute.

I need a panic room

August 26, 2008

Are panic rooms sound proof?

I just found a ‘new’ song on my iPod!

It’s a song by Fred Hammond that I downloaded back in 2002, but lost somewhere along the way. Turns out that my sister had an untitled version of it in her iTunes music, so I’m sitting here listening to songs on shuffle and it randomly started playing!
yayyyyyy!
“I just want to say I’m grateful, I thank You!”

so yes, i’m having a hard time containing myself. I wish there was a secret soundproof room in my office that I could go into every so often and sing at the top of my lungs.
that’s one of my fav things about driving. I get to blast my music and pretend no one can hear/ see me. :)

hmm, being ‘free’ to scream is something I miss about living in a standalone house too. I feel awkward singing loudly in my apartment.
though my sis came over this weekend and was yelling into her phone, and none of my neighbours knocked down my door to tell her to be quiet, so that’s a good sign…

Canada Post

August 25, 2008

I realize that this may be a tad bit nerdy, but check out Canada Post’s new website!

I really like this picture! It makes it seem like a neighbourhood postal service.
And check out the names of towns at the top!

Iqaluit… Rimouski… Brampton…Longueuil! I’m really surprised they didn’t just put the classic big cities! They even have my own stomping ground! –>Oakville!

haha, I should even call it a ’stomping ground’. I don’t think I was even aware of my feet/legs when I lived in Oakville.
Explanation: I was born in an Oakville hospital. So I guess I lived in Oakville for the day that the hospital kept me, before letting my parents take me home. …was it a day? how long did hospitals keep babies for “observation” back in the 80s?
I feel like these days they send you home hours after you pop out.
but I really know nothing on the subject.

like, one of my coworkers is pregnant, so I learned last week that you’re apparently not supposed to have caffeine when you’re pregnant?! hmph! who knew?!

anyways back to Canada Post.

On the Rate page, they have a ruler that you can download to check the size of your package!

how cute is that!

some may remember me complaining about Canada Post in the past.
Sometimes I like them…And sometimes they hate me.
It’s an interesting relationship.

Thanks TIME.

August 24, 2008

so I was looking online for a pic of these ULTRA cool bookends that I saw at Chapters yesterday:

they’re G.R.E.A.T!
life-size hands, and very heavy!

through my google search, I came across these cool (& slightly creepy) hand bookends:

I saw them on I Like Totally Love it. Which lead me to TIME Magazine’s list of the 50 Best Websites 2008.

It’s interesting.
There are a few “really?” ones on the list like Yahoo Answers, and websudoku.com.
But there are also website ‘gems’ that I like visiting too, like Apartment Therapy, Somecards, and Picnik.

Anyways, here’s a few that I thought were cool!
www.hulu.com - a slick looking online video player of free tv episodes and movies!
Imeem - a social network/ music player thing, like pandora, except they apparently have deals with the major record labels, so they have all kinds of songs at their disposal…
Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project - from what I understand, the people at the Uni of California converted a whole bunch of old records (music, speeches etc) and uploaded them for people to listen to for free on their website.
Free Rice Vocab Game - a fun game that helps improve your vocabulary and donate food to the UN World Food Program at the same time! (I played this a while back… can’t remember if I blogged about it though.)

I was surprised that twitter wasn’t on the list…

that’s all for now!

“Welcome to the Experience”

August 21, 2008

I like that phrase.

It’s on an intro to one of Rhema’s CDs.

so, I want a scarf hat!!

what a GREAT idea! it looks so comfy!!
I wish i could see it in person and try it on! …I’m not sure my head (and hair) would fit!

also on the hat front.. I want one of these:

mmm so snuggly!
it oddly reminds me of Lauryn Hill…
