everybody needs to know it’s the year of the rat

January 31, 2009

I was watching a trailer for Last Chance Harvey (Emma Thomson and Dustin Hoffman back together again!! yay!) and I love the song playing in the background!

it’s “The Shining” by Badly Drawn Boy. (I love the instrumenal bit at the beginning!)

A quick search on youtube and I found this video for BDB’s song “Year of the Rat”

awww so cute!

It smells like the taste of snow.

January 27, 2009

That’s what I thought when I was walking home from the subway station tonight.
…I’m not quite sure how else to describe the smell…

Anyways,
A delivery guy just made me smile.
He came and delivered my dinner– I know, I know, I’m supposed to be making my own food. But I stayed at the office for an extra 2.5 hours tonight, so I don’t have time to muck about the kitchen. (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it) — So I open the door and the delivery guy goes, “You’re my favourite delivery of the night! It doesn’t even take 10 minutes! You’re close to the door and I can even see my car from here… it’s great!!

aww so cute!
It made me laugh.

So Scrubs is on tonight!!
The new ‘Ed’ intern is cracking me up.
My fav new Scrubs quote: “I grew up on the street. No, not the hood, the Sesame Street.

also… JD & Elliott are dating again?! Whaaaaat?

I’m sore.

January 26, 2009

So I spent a good portion of the day today preparing boxes to be shipped to my next workshop location.
it was great. I love shipping boxes. (deep deep sarcasm)

I guess the boxes were too heavy, or I was too much in a rush or something cause I am SO sore right now.
I was laughing at myself when tried to get up off the couch.
hah, I’m getting old.

speaking of which - what should I do for my 25th birthday?

I’m not a big ‘birthday celebration’ person, so I won’t have a party, but I want to do something to commemorate my oldness.

When my sis turned 25 she jumped out of a plane - which I think is HILARIOUS!! I wouldn’t do it of course, but I do think it’s great.

A quick google search provided me with this list of 10 things to do before you turn 30:
1. Drive a wickedly cool car, even if you have to rent it.
2. Date against type
3. See the world
4. Live in a cool place
5. If you’re going to drink a lot, do it when you’re young.
6. Take risks with your job
7. Do something physically adventurous
8. Take your parents to dinner
9. Do volunteer work
10. Use this decade to go to extremes.

I do like the idea of driving across Canada… that’d be fun!
I wonder how long that would take… And how much it would cost…

In unrelated news…
this was my weekend:

I love braille!

time to watch the Thomas Crown Affair again!

January 25, 2009

I’m listening to the song ‘Sinnerman’ by Nina Simone.
I think it’s time for me to watch the Thomas Crown Affair again. it has been a few years since I last saw it.

So this morning I ended up going to the church that I intended to go to a couple weeks ago.
It was interesting.
I grew up in a church that was in a ‘newly built’ building, so whenever I attend a service in a really old building (you know, with the handcarved wooden pews and walls, and with a huge organ built into the structure) it always feels so ‘majestic’.

At the service this morning I was pleasantly surprised to see the percussionist playing a tuba!!!
It was SO random because there weren’t any other brass instruments in the praise band.
It was a couple guitars, a violin, and a tuba!

Actually, I kept staring at the instrument for a while, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it wasn’t actually a tuba, but rather a large baritone.
still though! Random!!

It made me think back on my ‘tuba days’ and the fact that I haven’t touched a tuba in about 6years. how odd!
I don’t really miss it….
though, I did really enjoy my silver tuba:

anyways, there was a guest speaker at the church this morning. He was from McMaster Uni and was talking about science & Christianity.
It felt more like a lecture than a sermon… but was interesting nonetheless!

during the subway ride I noticed a new ad from Bayview Glen Church! It was part of the Bus Stop Bible Studies campaign which I guess the church has partnered with…

it looked something like this:

…interesting!

cute!

A week or two ago I watched a TEDtalk by Caleb Chung. Chung is an inventor and created the Furby toys, among other things.
(I was never into those… I guess they came out after my time?)

The talk was fairly ‘ho hum’, until the end, when Chung introduced his latest toy! Pleo the Dinosaur!
Have people seen this thing? It looks adorable!

I think it came out like 3 years ago.
I want one!
(well…not really….)

oh what a night

January 22, 2009

I was surfing the net in my hotel room last night and I came across a post on the Toronto Craft Alert blog about an upcoming ‘book and music swap’ event.

I was completely intrigued, of course, but because of my work schedule lately I had a feeling that I would be too pooped out tonight to want to make the ‘trek’ downtown to the event.

Thankfully though - the workshop today ended early and I arrived home at a reasonable time!! I watched tv, had dinner, took a 2 hour nap, and then headed out to the Book and Music Swap at Beaver Hall Gallery.

It was great! I’m a huge fan of swapped stuff.

I took a few of my unwanted Cds with me. And left with a few different things, including…

Remy Shand:

remember this guy? I liked him in a ‘I don’t like the song that’s playing on the radio, but I do like the fact that you’re trying to do something different’ kinda way. I’m hoping to find a hidden gem on this album. I think it could happen…

The Jazzyfatnastees:

that’s right.

speaking of jazz, I passed by the (legendary?) Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar on Queen’s street and someone was ripping it up on the piano.
I want to go there sometime.
…preferably not alone… ;)

One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest:

I don’t think I’ve read this yet…

A couple CDs for my mom.
(awwww)

And three homemade CDs!
The Wallflowers:

(back:)

John Mayer Live:

Doin’ Time:

I originally wasn’t going to pick this up, but I love the fact that whoever donated it wrote on it:
“I bought this off a guy playing in Eglinton station. While I’m happy to support local talent, I really disliked this.”
hehehe.
On the other side, the person drew a pic of the guy:

I feel like I’ve probably seen him around…. I remember thinking that it was odd that he had a bird on his shoulder.

ps - I LOVE Beaver Hall Gallery! This was my first time there and I am thrilled with the fact that anyone can rent it out for an evening/day/week/month!
I picked up a ‘pamphlet’ and I’ve stuck it on my fridge to remind myself to think of events that I might want to host there! …I mean, $50!! What a bargain!

WiLT - Jan 22, 09

This morning I learned that when staying at hotels, you should always keep your keycard, cause your credit card info and personal information is stored on it.

…someone told this to me.

and when searching on the net for some more info, I found this.
IT’S A HOAX!
Snopes.com to the rescue!

seems kinda silly actually….

in other news… someone was shot on the subway platform this morning!!
WHAT!!!!
that’s scary!
Subway platforms are cramped (sometimes crammed with people) and there’s no where to go!
*shudder*

here’s something interesting:
- Voice Knitting Machine: I want my voice on a sweater!

travels..

So I went to Gananoque earlier this week.

It was an interesting trip.

I took the VIA Rail, which I love, because they consider me a youth (yay!!!). I’ll dislike them in about 4 months time.
anyways, I got on the train after work on Monday and it was fairly busy.

It was intriguing actually because a lot of the people knew each other… anyways, a couple stops outside of Toronto (around the Port Hope area), everyone got off the train!
So I’m guessing they are daily commuters, and they all knew each other in a ‘Train 48: I commute with you every morning/evening’ kind of way.

So after they all left, the train was quiet and nice.

Around 8:30pm we arrived in Gananoque and I got off the train.
… and this is where I was:

…nowhere?

The train station was closed. And felt like it was in the middle of nowhere.

A guy got off the train with me, but his ride arrived in about 2 minutes. So I was left there alone.
And it was fun!

I took pictures:

There were a bunch of positives about the whole ’stranded in the middle of nowhere’ situation:
a) I didn’t have to go to the washroom! (Imagine how uncomfortable it would be if I did have to go!)
b) It wasn’t super cold outside. …Actually it was nice.
c) This was what the side of the train station looked like:

A public phone and business cards for taxi services!

So I called a cab and it arrived in about 10 minutes.

I did have a couple concerns though.
1) What if a wild animal arrives out of the wilderness! Where would I go? the train station was all locked up!
Thankfully, there were some nearby houses that I figure I could make a mad dash to.

2) I was planning on getting to a car with this unknown cab driver.
When he arrived he was very non-creepy, was driving a van, and there was a baby seat in the trunk. cute!

So the rest of the story is picture-less and fairly ho-hum… arrived at the inn (it was a spa!!) and had the workshop and then went to Kingston and went home! (That’s when I used the net on my iPod for the first ime!)

The Inn overlooked the St. Lawrence (or so I’m told) so it was pretty setting.

Eeeee!!!!!

January 20, 2009

Guess who is curretly blogging from her iPod??!!

Eeeeeee!!!

I’m ecstatic!!
This is fantastic!!
(alright, I’ll stop with the exclamation marks…)

So I’m sitting here on the train coming home from Kingston. I decided to pay the astronomical fee to use the Internet. And I think it’s worth it! This is the first time using the net on my iPod. (for some reaseon it doesn’t seem to want to work when the wi-fi is secured…I haven’t figured that one out yet.)

So this is the first thing I’ve done since I registered. Quite fitting no? Next on my list is to write a quick note on my twitter account!

After that I’m not sure how I’ll spend the ride… Maybe watch some YouTube videos or catch up on blogs… Ooo!! Watch the inauguration! While downloading stuff from itunes!

Aside: I heard on the radio the other day that some researchers in Austrailia (I think) did a study on the productivity of of workers in open concept offices.
They found that employees in offices with an open concept were less productive than those working in a more divided space! They said things like workers were more apprehensive about doing things like making phone calls because they knew their coworkers could hear their conversations. The report was pretty interesting! I’m still trying to track it down.
It was nice to hear that I’m not the only one who has issues with open offices.

Alrighty! I’m off to surf the net! I think I’ll watch Brigitte Dale’s latest video blog! I don’t think I’ve mentioned her here yet, but I will probably start mentioning her often… I came across her ‘vlog’s during the Christmas holidays. Hours and hours of entertainment!

watching another documentary

January 18, 2009

oh goodness.

I just finished watching another heart wrenching documentary.
This one was called ‘Coma‘ and over the course of a year, followed four people who experienced brain trama.

It was devastating.
and emotional… on both sides of the coin. I almost lost it when one of the patients all of a sudden hugged his mom and dad. It was one of his first real acknowledgments that he knew who they were.

and then there was another time when a doctor realized that the patient might have impaired hearing and that could be the reason why he wasn’t responding to people.
So the doctor asked the patient a question and received no response. And then he wrote it down on a piece of paper and received a response. They were simple tasks like ‘Say this phrase: the dog barked.

And then the doctor decided to ‘raise the stakes’ and wrote down:
“Point to the artificial illumination of this enclose”
And the man pointed to the light bulbs!

YAYYYY!

It was very exciting.

At the end of the film they had this statistic:
A brain injury occurs every 15 seconds in the United States.

scary.

oh weddings…

I went wedding dress shoping yesterday.

It was ‘interesting’…
1) I didn’t expect the ‘take your shoes off at the entrance’ thing
2) It was kinda weird to see so many women wearing wedding dresses at the same time (in the change room). What was that movie where there are a bunch of women wearing wedding dresses and running down the street?
3) I was surprised by the sales person at one of the places who went into the change room with my friend to help her put on the dresses.
bold.

We also went to a wedding show. …for 3.5 hours.
It didn’t feel that long though.

oh weddings…

So I saw this over on Photojojo the other day, I think it’s genius:

Backblaze - online backup software.

I didn’t even realize that this was even an option!
maybe I’ll actually backup my computer now!
