week-long indian food craving: satisfied

July 18, 2009

I don’t know how I didn’t realize this sooner… Chef of India is 3 blocks away from my flat!
mmmm
saag paneer,
butter chicken, and
roti.
yum!

podcast love

I’m currently sitting in a comfy purple armchair.
yum.
There are only two of us here, but I feel weird about taking pictures, so I’m waiting for the other person to leave…

oh, and I’m listening to The Lining is Silver by Relient K.
I like this song.
I made this a couple days ago:

“isn’t it nice to know that the lining is silver”"

but I’m “supposed” to be writing about podcasts! my fav!!

here’s a list (not in any particular order) of some podcasts that I recommend:

This American Life

of course.
do I really need to say anything about TAL?
It’s top quality and super interesting.
Here’s what iTunes says: “First-person stories and short fiction pieces that are touching, funny, and surprising. Hosted by Ira Glass, from WBEZ Chicago Public Radio.”

< aside>: here’s where we stand with the ‘taking pictures’ thing. The other person did leave!! YAY! I was so excited! but I didn’t want to appear too eager, so I decided to wait until she had actually left the room to start snapping pics (and to take her seat - the best seat in the place!)
Well, as she approached the door, someone else came in! “noooooooooooooooooo!!” It was sad.
and now he’s sitting in her seat, AND he taps his space bar unreasonably hard.
“CLICK CLICK CLICK”

it’s driving me crazy. < /aside>

TED.

oh TED, how I love thee.
I actually haven’t been watching too many TEDTalks lately. but I still love them. I just needed some space.
iTunes describes TEDTalks this way: “Each year, the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference hosts some of the world’s most fascinating people: Trusted voices and convention-breaking mavericks, icons and geniuses. These podcasts (also available in audio format) capture the most extraordinary presentations delivered from the TED stage.”
(hah - I can’t hear the word ‘maverick’ without laughing!)

so, I realize that this entry is quickly becoming a hogwash of all types of things, but I can’t help myself.
At the end of a recent TEDTalk about how cults rewire your brain, there was this GE commercial:

That’s the music from Joshua Radin’s song “It’s a Brand New Day”!! Isn’t that exciting?!
…I was excited. I haven’t actually read through the commercial. I’m assuming it has something to do with new birth or reinvention or something?

speaking of commercials at the end of TEDTalks, there was an AMAZING video advertisement at the end of Katherine Fulton’s TedTalk titled: You are the Future of Philanthropy”
And I can’t find it online! argh.
When I first watched it I was scared, confused, intrigued, mystified, pleased and more confused!
I assume it was a Nokia commercial because Nokia’s ad appeared at the beginning of the Talk, but this video made no mention or referral to Nokia.
It featured coloured spheres floating around and bumping into eachother, based on female voices. The women were singing dissonant harmonies. it was fantastic.
I checked, it doesn’t appear at the end of the online version of Fulton’s video, so if you’re intrigued enough to watch it, you’ll have to download the Talk on iTunes. (The Talk is good though! …and free by the way :)

Continuing with the scattered nature of entry, this is the homepage of Nokia’s website:

what.in.the.world. ???

I thought Nokia was a phone company. Do they dabble in hair styling now?

okay! next podcast!

BBC Documentaries!

Super high quality audio documentaries with in an irresistible British accent!
Here’s what iTunes says: “Throughout the week BBC World Service offers a wide range of documentaries and other factual programmes. This podcast offers you the chance to landmark series from our archive. “

The Current

mmm CBC!
The Current is great for interesting conversations and they have documentaries sometimes!
iTunes says: “CBC Radio’s The Current is a meeting place of perspectives with a fresh take on issues that affect Canadians today”
I would expand that to include people other an Canadians, cause they do comment on some Canadian news stories, but mostly they talk about North American and global issues…

The New Yorker: Out Loud

I started listening to this one recently. It’s good for when I want to hear an entire conversation, but I don’t have 30 minutes. These conversations are usually around 10 - 15 minutes.
iTunes: “A weekly conversation about what’s new in the New Yorker.”
The ones I’ve listened to include:
- a review of Naomi Klein’s book: ‘The Shock Doctrine”
- African merchants in China
- the importance and new popularity of Scrabble
- the murder case of Anna Politkovskaya
- scholar’s dislike of creative writing courses
- Nora Roberts and the history of the romance novel

There are other podcasts that I listen to (like CBC’s Q and Ideas) but I think I’ll leave it at those 5.

Anyone have any other podcasts to recommend?

photo status:
I took some pics! incognito-style!!

I just let the police into my building.

sketchy!!

I’m glad I’m not asleep yet.

it’s late.
TMZ has come and gone.
I’m now onto a Canadian celebrity tv gossip show.
great.

I will start getting ready for bed eventually. I’ve finished my list of Procrastinating Things To Do Online. It may be time for an extra long shower or something.

why the procrastination?
because someone is making crazy amounts of noise at the front door!!

okay, not crazy amounts… just random loud LOUD noises.
one actually made me jump.
I have no idea what she/he is doing.
and why is it happening at 2am?!
argh.

oh - I briefly heard The Most Serene Republic playing live on Q and I like what I heard!

I was going to embed the video to the song, but it is way way too creepy. (kid clowns!)
so you’ll just have to take my word for it.
or listen to the Q episode. (I actually prefer this version. It’s more acoustic.)

oh, one other thing - I’ve decided what I’m going to do to celebrate my bday / quarter of a century-ness!
I’m going to do (at least) 25 new things over the course of the year.
and new things as in ‘kayaking for the first time’ or ‘getting my first piercings’, not things like ‘eating a ham sandwich with ketchup’.
so I have three things so far. I may/ may not document them here. I will document them somewhere though. 22 more to go!

yikes.
