another day, another documentary

June 8, 2009

I randomly came across this documentary on tv called “Chichester’s Choice: The Story”. It’s about the filmmaker’s search to find out about her father, and to find him on the streets in Brazil.

or as the website says:

“Simonee Chichester investigates the life of her homeless father, Edgar Chichester, who left when she was six years old. 23 years later, Simonee journeys to the streets of Brazil to reunite with Edgar in the hopes of understanding him and herself. “

I came across it about 80% into the film, but it still had me crying within 10 minutes.
it was good.
I imagine the first 80% was quite interesting as well.

Right now I’m watching another documentary (I LOVE TVO!!!) which features people from across the pond.
love the accent.

speaking of which, during work on Friday I had the opportunity to call someone from Virginia. His accent was fantastic!! (so much so that after I hung up the phone, I got up and when to a coworker’s desk to exclaim that he had one of the best accents ever!)
I have spoken with other ‘Virginians’ before and haven’t been nearly as impressed, so it may have been a combination of this guy’s actual voice and his accent. …and maybe his pleasant-ness.

anyways,
This club, The Fifth, is located close to where I work. I like their logo:

Addiction House Party!!

May 26, 2009

I discovered a really cool tobacco website last week (www.tobaccofreeflorida.com check it out!)

I was in a drug store last week and I was shocked to see the cover of the latest Macleans magazine:

yikes!
I feel like the addictions community will be up in arms. like, they ‘fought’ for years to get alcohol addiction to be viewed as a disease and now they’ve gone back to square one.

In the Toronto Star last week they had an article entitled “Addiction: Could it be a lie?” the byline is: “A Harvard psychologist’s new book argues that addiction isn’t really an illness, infuriating the medical establishment. We examine his incendiary hypothesis”

Anyways, all this addiction talk reminded me of the HBO Addiction Documentary Series!

…you can watch the various segments online for free!
I was going to do this…but then I thought, why not have an Addictions House Party?!!
(I didn’t make up this idea.)
— Get some people together,
— maybe make it a big to-do and rent out the Beaver Hall Gallery for the screening!
— I can make invitations!
— Maybe convince someone to act as the ‘host’ and facilitate the discussion!

…who’s in? :D

I’m SO excited with this idea!

this looks so good!

today’s work day was pretty crummy. but I’ve had worse days, so…. I guess it’s okay?
I get pissed when I feel like people are treating me like I’m an idiot.

anyways,
I decided today that I like shoes with bright coloured soles.

also, this movie looks SOOO great!

I’m excited.

celebrating Friday

February 21, 2009

it’s the weekend! And I finally finished reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides!!
SO well written!!
I was explaining it to someone the other day and was doing such a horrible job. I couldn’t quite convey the storyline and how the past/present are interwoven throughout…

anyways,
I was in Windsor yesterday!
“yay”
actually it wasn’t that bad. The hotel room was sweet. It was about 1.5times the size of my apartment. And the bed was perhaps the comfiest I’ve ever been on. (Either that or I was just really tired…)
The plane I took was kinda cute. It was a 36-seater and and a ‘couch’-type seat along the back of the plane.

I was pooped after arriving home last night around 10:00, but I switched on the tv and the Helvetica Film was playing on TVO! SUPER exciting! So of course I stayed up to watch that.
I love TVO for playing such great documentaries…
So #1 : I had NO idea Helvetica was everywhere. Throughout the film they showed how Helvetica is being used (coporate logos, government documents, street signs, etc) and I was s.h.o.c.k.e.d! It’s everywhere!!
#2: I love the interview with Erik Spiekermann!

Most of the other interviewees were singing the praises of Helvetica. I almost felt like they would start saying that Helvetica is the saviour of civilization.
And then Spiekermann comes on and says something like, “Why is Helvetica used so often? Why is stupidity ubiquitous?”

very productive!

January 2, 2009

these last few days I’ve been doing a lot of pointless web surfing. I dunno what it is, but I’ll look back on a day and realize that I spent a lot of time online, but with nothing to show for it!

…so I’ve decided to write this post, so I’ll have something to show for the last 30 minutes. (hah!)

Today is the second day of 2009…so here are nine things:

1: I went to Value Village today and saw like 5 different zigzag afghans. It was really sad! Mostly because I am making a zigzag afghan right now and I think it’s destined for a secondhand shop. …selling for $5.00. *sniff.
well, hopefully I’ll get some good use out of it first!

2:
Also sad, I watched the movie ‘Young at Heart’ this afternoon. (Thanks T.O Public Library!) I’d heard about the film beforehand so I was expecting a lot… but it wasn’t bad…
I will admit though, I did fast forward certain parts.
I did tear-up at other parts though, so I’m not heartless…

3.

The other day I was watching a documentary on Seahorses and I learned two interesting things:
a) unlike many other animals, Seahorses mate with only one other partner. Apparently they’re very loyal!
b) It is the male seahorse which gets pregnant and gives birth to the babies! The documentary showed the entire process (the female impregnating the male with the eggs… the male giving birth) it was not really anything I wanted to see…
but in water, everything seems to look more magical.. even when the seahorses weren’t positioned the right way and the female’s eggs were discarded into the water.
aww.

well, 3 is all I have for now. stay tuned for the next 6… ;)

hoopla

November 1, 2008

what a great word.

So yes, I’m back in town! yuppie!!

I was telling Mandy yesterday how I had missed my little apartment. …and my bed!
that’s particularly odd because my bed is actually a couch. and while I was away I had the luxury of a big double bed!
still though, I guess there really is no place like home.

Vancouver was fun! It was a good vacation because I got to do some news things, but I also had time to sit around a sew and do nothing.

I watched lots of random tv shows (John & Kate + 8 is really addicting!) and movies.

I saw Psycho for the first time and was/am shocked by just how psycho it is!! I am SO impressed with Hitchcock!
While watching it, my sis and I had a clue about how it would turn out, but it was still SHOCKING when it was actually revealed!! I kept thinking about the original audience that watched the movie and how horrified and confused they must have been!

There’s one image that keeps staying in my mind. One of the characters is looking at a piece of paper that another person is holding and he’s ’straining his neck’ to read it, and the camera is angled so that you’re viewing his neck from below. With the shadows and everything, it was SO creepy! and so impressive! I’d never think that there would be a way to make a neck be creepy.

The Birds has now been bumped up on my list of movies to watch!

So hmm, what else can I say about my trip…
it was fun to be in Vancouver, but I wasn’t particularly blown away by anything, which is okay….

here are two pics of a ferry boat:

but as I was saying, I wouldn’t mind living in Vancouver, but I didn’t encounter anything that made me say, “I need to move here right away”.

I wrote a bit more about the trip here. (It’s under the ‘Pages’ title on the right-hand side.)

I said rock, what’s the matter with you rock?

July 17, 2008

That’s a line from the song “Sinnerman” by Nina Simone. It’s great. …well, the music at least, I haven’t paid too much attention to the words.
I love how in the middle, the song randomly changes to something completely different.

plus, it reminds me of this scene:
(warning: spoiler alert for the movie: Thomas Crown Affair)

I really like that movie!

So I’ve decided to write a blog on the website at work that I maintain. Hah!
It’ll be great.
Well, I think it’s a great idea, but I’ll probably have to go through some bureaucracy in order to get approval or something.
…either that, or I just start writing it and no one finds out for months b/c they don’t visit the site…
hmm, maybe I’ll do that….
