goals update

December 9, 2007

I accomplished all my goals this weekend!!

HAH! yeah right!

yesterday I ended up going shoe shopping and on a Wal-Mart run (for yarn and stuff!), so I spent a lot of time NOT making 50 Christmas cards.

I made ten.

yay me! … I like them though, so that’s good. they’re fairly simple (just words), but as I said, I like them, so I’m excited about making more.

pics to come…sometime….

On the scarf front, I’m ACTUALLY knitting!
I had issues getting it started (I’m a pro at doing that cast on thing!)… it was way way way too tight, so I recruited my mom to help with that part. She did the first row and I’ve been running with it since!
…well, not literally. running with knitting needles would be fairly dangerous…

It looks really good! …from afar.
Up close is another story.
My mom has had a couple fun comments about it so far:
“wow. that’s…um…. ‘wild’….”.
“how did you get a hole in it? Did you miss a stitch? …no, that’s not possible…”
“well, when you wash it it will shrink…”

I’m proud of myself though.
And it’s fun. I’ve been uploading music onto the iPod and watching dvds (The Office and Corner Gas!) while I knit.

Speaking of the iPod, I discovered the games on it last night.
I love them.
Around 3am I forced myself to turn it off and go to sleep.
But seriously, quizzes on my own music!! GENIUS!!

My desk is currently covered under stacks of CDs.
Another one of my goals for this weekend was to tackle the laborious task of uploading my music collection onto my iPod.
Surprisingly, it has made me reacquaint myself with some super cool CD designs.

The one I’ll feature today is Plus 44’s “When your heart stops beating”.

the cover:

(I kept the sticker to ’shield my eyes’ from the parent advisory warning :)

the inside has the name of the album:

(I removed the plastic thing that holds the cd in place)

The CD “booklet” is in the shape of a plus sign! ..how clever!

It includes all lyrics, which is a plus! (whoa, no pun intended.)
There are also semi-creepy pics of the 4 band members:

alrighty, Corner Gas is calling! I’m off to do more knitting!

Why I buy Cds

December 5, 2007

I’m a member of the quickly diminishing group of people who still buy actual Cds.

There are a few reasons for this, one of them being CD booklets.

I LOVE a good CD booklet!

So much so that I started taking pictures of them and posting them here! (A couple of you may remember this post. …or this one.)

I have a new favourite to share.

It’s for KT Tunstall’s album “Drastic Fantastic”
I actually don’t know how much of a fan I am of her music… I just bought the cd b/c I saw her in an interview and she seemed like a nice person. (haha)
I didn’t buy her first album because I think one of her main songs had some curse word repeatedly in the chorus.
…it might have been something like “damn” though.

(ahaha, I’m so hypocritical with my “won’t listen to songs with swearing in them” policy!! …I’ve been listening to ‘Stronger’ on repeat for days now!!)

anyways, her cd is great.

first of all, the cover:

it’s fun… but the inside is what shines:

The booklet is a comic book graphic novel!!

eeeee!! That’s a picture of her!!

Isn’t it great?!

I actually haven’t ‘read’ through it yet, so I’m not quite sure if the songs match up with the pics/story of the comics…
I doubt that they will though, b/c the comics look fairly dramatic!!

Still though, I think it’s fantastic!
..Drastically Fantastic!

(hah, I just thought of that! …how clever am I?)

“i hear in my mind all of these voices”

August 10, 2007

doesn’t this look yummy?!!:

friend ordered it yesterday at starbucks.
mmm

so i’m very slowly taking pics of cds cases that i like.
i started with Denzal Sinclaire’s “My One and Only Love”, and now here’s Keane’s “Hopes and Fears”:

i love the grand piano on the back of the booklet.

Father’s Day Shopping adventure

June 17, 2007

So i/we left it till the last possible moment to buy a Father’s Day gift for my ‘Pa’.
lol. i think it’d be HILARIOUS to call him that!
i should try it!
it reminds me of that old show…i don’t think it was Anne of Green Gables… but something along those ‘old’ lines.
…a family of 5 or something… i remember there were 2 girls. and they all lived in a wood cabin. …and one of the girls became a teacher when she grew up.

anyways, so my mom thought that he might like a digital picture frame.
i figured that he might ‘like’ it, but not necessarily ‘want’ it, but i went to go buy it anyways.
simple task right?
i knew where i wanted to get it from… and actually i knew the exact one i wanted to buy! (because i had bought it for someone else a few weeks ago.)

so i go to the closest Walmart (like 10minutes away) and it’s like a mad house.
people just all over the place.

so i go to the electronics section and there’s no one there to open the display case for me.
so i ask one of the cashiers if someone is around who can do it, and she didn’t say ‘no’, but was basically like, ‘no’.
(there was only one person available and she was dealing with a mob of people over by the camera section.)

so i tell the cashier i’ll be by the digital frame area if another person comes by, she can direct them to me….
i do end up seeing another person, but he was helping some other people find something, and having a big deep conversation.

so i’m just standing there…not looking at the product, cuz i already know everything about it.
eventually i decided, Hey! if they don’t have anyone who can simply open the display case for me, then i don’t have to give them my money!
so i left the store and drove 25 minutes to another Walmart.

haha, my whole ‘not giving them my money’ thing doesn’t really make any sense if i just drive to another branch of the same company. :)

so at this Walmart, they don’t even have the frames under lock and key, AND there are no customers and the staff are standing around looking bored out of their minds!
SCORE!!
…except that they don’t have the frame i wanted, instead they have ones that cost $80-$100 more.
bummmmer.

so after that i got a call from my mom saying that i could get my dad the tv dvd series for ‘Deadwood’.
that’s a new ‘old western’ show on HBO.

my dad had never seen it, but he apparently saw a commercial for it and instinctively yelled out ‘you could get me THIS for Father’s Day!’
he has a tendancy for saying things off-the-cuff like this… ask him the show ‘Deadwood’ tomorrow and he’ll be like, ‘what’s Deadwood?’

anyways, so at this point i’m already on the road driving to a third Walmart branch, but i decide to go to BestBuy which is closer to my house…. and i figured i could pick up a couple cds at the same time! ;)

Turns out BestBuy only has the 1st & 2nd seasons in stock.
i was going to buy the 3rd season because it’s on sale…for $70!
that’s CRAZY expense!
was season 2 of Grey’s Anatomy even that much money?
anyways, the 1st and 2nd seasons cost $100 each.

so i left that place and was thinking about where i could try next.
i decided on the closest Blockbuster store… which was just ‘around the corner’!
so i go in, and the people greet me, as usual, and i ask them if they have Deadwood season3, and they direct me to the area…
i pick up a couple ‘previously viewed’ movies… (they have some CRAZY sales going on… 4 for $20! …granted, the selection for that price isn’t good… but i got Inside Man at the 2 for $18 price!)

here’s a question, i’ve noticed lately that whenever i buy movies at Blockbuster they take the disk and jacket out of the ‘original’ case and put it in a new case.
new cases are cool and everything, but i don’t understand why they do that…
maybe it’s so that i don’t have to remove the price tag label from the case?
…i usually leave the prices on, so whenever i watch the movie i feel good about the great price i paid. :)
hah!

but anyways, the store was semi-empty and as i was talking to the “sales associate” about the series he was like FULL of knowledge about it!
like you know when you encounter someone who seems like they are a perfect fit with their profession? it was one of those situations.

he ended up completely changing my mind about what i was going to buy.
I walked in: intending on buying season 3 of Deadwood.
i walked out: renting 7 episodes from the first season of Deadwood.

and it worked out cuz i don’t think my dad likes it very much.

anyways, that’s today’s shopping experience.
basically just driving around.
I had some cds with me that i don’t listen to very often, so it was a nice treat!

here’s part of the lyrics from a song called éstaté (summer) which is on Denzal Sinclaire’s latest album:
I always feel you near me
In every song the morning breeze composes
In all the tender wonder of the roses
Each time the setting sun smiles on the sea

isn’t that pretty?!!
his actual cd and cd booklet are pretty too.
i couldn’t resist taking pics! :)

Orange and grey!!

this is my favourite page spread. ..there’s another one where he’s holding flowers that’s a close second.

“you’re the swimming pool on an August day”

April 28, 2007

i like that Michael Buble song: “Everything” it’s cute.
it’s you, it’s you, you make me sing.
you’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything.

oddly enough, that song reminds me of Dollarama. :D
i think it’s cuz the first time i sang along to the song was when i was walking around that store.
i wasn’t a fan of his. …but that’ll probably change, cuz i don’t really have a valid excuse.

speaking of music, last week when i was at Chapters i saw Carla Bruni’s album “Quelqu’un M’a Dit” up by the cash registers!
i was shocked!
i was tempted to make an impulse buy, but it was $18. and that’s just too much.
so i was confused. why was Chapters selling this 2-year old french cd all of a sudden?!

today, i found out why.
Bruni released an english cd in February!!

it’s pretty cool, if i do say so myself.
superficially, the cd case/jacket is nice. …pretty pictures and i like the feel of the paper. :D
more substantially, the music is really good!! bruni still has her calm ‘airy’ voice, and the songs are all from poems by random people like Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats and Dorothy Parker.
and along with the lyrics, the cd booklet has mini bios of all the artists. so that’s fun too.

so anyways i laid off the card-making for the past couple days.
instead, i found Freezer paper (MAN that stuff is hard to track down!) and used it to make tissue paper envelopes! here are yesterday’s fun ones:

and today i wanted to see what would happen if i used wrapping paper… it didn’t really work as well…

today’s cup was a gift from mandy!! inspired by my “someone should invent see-through mugs” comment a couple years ago.
i really like it. it’s HUGE! and huge cups are more fun. :)

plus i enjoy drinking coffee products in it that AREN’T from Starbucks.

so i was thinking, how cool would it be to have a set of mismatching dishes!
i mean like when moving into a new house or something, instead of buying a 16-piece set, buy different pieces from different sources.
maybe over the span of a few months, only buying a max of 2 matching pieces…
then any meal, or dinner party will be more fun cuz you can choose what dish you want, and each one would hold a specific memory…
maybe i’ll do that when i eventually move out. :D
